SYMPTOMS:
Doom 3 has no sound

RESOLUTION:
The no sound with Doom 3 issue can be resolved by changing the default bit rate in your Midi Setup from 2ch - 24bit to 2ch -16Bit.

To do this, open the Audio Midi Setup control panel in the Applications/Utilities folder.

Change "Properties For": to "Built - in Output" instead of "Built-in Mic". This will show you the Output options. The sample rate should be at 44,100hz, but the Bit rate is defaulted to 2ch - 24bit. Change that to 2ch -16Bit. Once this is changed, Doom 3 should have sound from the internal speaker without having to plug in speakers or headphones.

I am running a 2011 MB Air i7 with 4GB Ram and the game is running fine graphically. However when I try to use my BT headset to play the game there is no sound. This is the only prog I have on my computer where this happens. I don't want to play the game using the MBA internal speakers so what is the workaround here.

The sound fix isn't working for me.

I'm running a MacPro tower and run sound via a Apogee Duet interface to speakers.

In the Midi App the Duet setting only has one setting available which is 2ch-24bit.

Any ideas?

I can't run the sound through the internal speakers of a tower!

you might want to contact the maker of your speakers.

there might be a way to patch the MIDI app or an update that might add 2ch -16Bit.

Unfortunately, we cant test on all third party hardware so we cant guaranty this will work.

I have found that if I change my Audio/Midi Settings AND unplug my Apogee Duet BEFORE running Doom 3 then I do get sound.  I was also able to plug my Duet back in after the game began without any problems.

I have both the retail version and the Mac App Store version.  I bought the MAS version to avoid having to put the disc in.  I noticed the MAS version no longer supports OpenAL since the game no longer outputs audio to my Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 USB audio device.  The game can't change the sample rate to 44100 so it disables the sound system.  However, the old version with OpenAL support has no problems.  Neither does a version I have that's built off the open source code.  Is there any reason why OpenAL support was removed from the MAS version?
