 -       Why is there no multiplayer or support for SteamWorks and SteamPlay?

Because of the business model and licensing requirements of SteamPlay and SteamWorks, Aspyr is unable to support either for RAGE Mac at this time.  A Steam account and the Steam client are required for multiplayer and Apple’s Mac App Store does not allow for technology such as SteamWorks in their store.

-What Controllers are supported for playing RAGE: Campaign Edition?

There are only two controllers supported for playing Rage CE:

The Official Xbox 360 Wired USB controller and the Games for Windows 360 wired USB controller are only two controllers supported for playing Rage CE:

Why only two controllers are supported? I have a logitech cordless rumblepad 2 and I can't play to Rage.

The Rage system requirements are listed above. If you have the processing power and 4 GB of RAM it will work. If you are below any of the minimum requirements, it will be problematic.

How can use Rage with the Xbox 360 wired controller? I am using the Tattiebogle latest driver 0.11. The controller works in the control panel and for the other two games I used it for: Mafia 2 and Bioshock. For some reasons, it does NOT work on Rage. Please help! Bough Rage from Mac App Store Sweden. After download Rage will not launch. The application icon flashes/blinks a few times and then nothing happens.  System: iMac 27" 2,8 GHz intel Core i5, ATI Radeon HD 5750 1024 MB, 8 GB DDR3. Mac OS Extended (journaled)

In App Store costumers reviews several customers reports the same problem.

Same problem as above - clean install twice, but without any result.

Seems that I missed a line in the system requirements: "This game is not supported on volumes formatted as Mac OS Extended". Apparently my system is in the Mac OS Extended (journaled) format, overlooked that initially. Can bet the people above face the same issue.

Jason - did we really waste our money now? Is there any workaround or patch available?

Thank you in advance!

I also have the same problem on my iMac 27", i7, ATI 4850, 8GB RAM. Only thing I get in my logs right after I'm trying to start it is: "com.apple.SecurityServer: Session 100017 created". If I try and start it again I'll get the same message but with a higher number "...100018 created".

Steven: The important thing in the file system requirements is the "CaseSensitive" part, I think that 99.99999% of OS X users are using "Mac OS Extended (journaled)" and only 0.00001% is using the "MAC OS Extended (CaseSensitive)". So I think both you and the rest of us are safe on that one. :)

These messages must be related to RAGE®. And it looks like a memory problem?? I think Apple should pull this software ASAP from the appstore. No point downloading 15GB to see this. Looking at Aspyr, well, looking at how they still haven't got Sim City 4 up and running ok on Mac OS X I don't expect much.

I'm glad I'm not alone with this!

I contacted Aspyr support about this yesterday, and sent them a System Report, and here's the reply:

"Unfortunately, the error generating is referencing a failure of the App Store verification receipt validating. Since the game was just released yesterday, it could be due to an overburdened network access issue. Please reinstall and relaunch the game until the account verification displays properly.

We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience in this matter.

I have now downloaded Rage 3 times from the App Store, and it still won't open.

Same issue here - iMac 27" 3.4GHz i7; 8GB RAM. Launch and close within a second.

Are Aspyr really suggesting we download 13.4GB of data again?! Surely there has to be a less bandwidth intensive fix - otherwise I'll be requesting a refund (seems others that have re-downloaded are still having the same problem too).

Same here, met all system requirements except the HFS+ part. I overlooked this part. @Aspyre, why publish a game which does not support the default Apple file system. HFS+ is factory default. I see many positive comments from US App Store users. Most of the complaints come from European users. Are European Mac's installed with a case sensitive HFS+ file system and US Mac's with case insensitive HFS+?

Go to System Preferences > Language & Text - ensure that English is the uppermost Language on the Language Tab - try and start RAGE now.

I at least get the Start-up screen now, when British English was uppermost, I couldn't even get that far - will play some more, but thought I'd post a potential 'fix' quick.

Downloaded wirelessly from Mac App store (living in Italy), used the changing language to English fix. It plays beautifully - no  glitches/bugs/graphics problems as yet (MacBook Pro 15" / 2.8GHz / 4GB RAM / NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512 MB).

However, I am having difficulty saving. About 50% of the time, when pressing ESC and clicking on 'save', the game just quits. A little frustrating. Anyone else having similar problems?

Hi all; re the Xbox 360 controller problem. I couldn't use the controller in RAGE until I disabled the tattiebogle driver that I use to support the controller in other Mac games . I didn't want to uninstall it completely, but as soon as I disabled it, it sprung into life in RAGE. So I guess the driver conflicts with the game's controller support.

In case you have the same setup as me - to disable the controller while playing RAGE, open a terminal, change to /System/Library/Extensions and run 'sudo kextunload 360Controller.kext' (you'll need your admin password for this - look up the sudo command if you're not sure about this). To enable the driver again, use 'sudo kextload 360Controller.kext'.

Hope this helps.

@-brew: check my post above regarding the Mac and the Xbox controller. Assuming you have the same setup as me (the 'tattiebogle' driver), it can be unloaded while playing RAGE and then loaded back in to play other games that need it. That driver conflicts with the RAGE code (or vice versa - depends on your perspective, I guess :).

February 06, 2012 07:28 pm

Jason, the tattiebogle Xbox360 controller driver is unloaded using the shell. (The driver is a kernel extension, and these can be loaded and unloaded at run-time.) Your preferences and the preference pane will remain intact, it's just that the driver won't be doing any USB 'work'. (By the way - if you 'uninstall' the driver from System Preferences, all that actually happens is you don't have a preference pane any more. The driver remains 'installed' and loaded. Actually uninstalling this driver is a manual process of removing several files from various OS X locations.)

The process is as follows: to (temporarily) disable the controller, open a terminal and, as an admin user, change to /System/Library/Extensions and run 'sudo kextunload 360Controller.kext' (you'll need to enter your password for this - look up the sudo command if you're not sure about what's going on). To enable the driver again, use 'sudo kextload 360Controller.kext'. You might want to put together a shell script or some AppleScript to automate the process nicely.

My understanding of the issue is this - essentially, the driver intercepts and translates the USB 'traffic' from the wired controller, or the wireless receiver, and feeds it to the game in a language it can understand. The RAGE software is doing the same thing, which is why they 'conflict'. Stop the driver from 'intercepting' the USB traffic and RAGE starts 'getting it' instead.

This is also why the process works for both the wired and wireless controllers - the USB interface is 'the same'. I've used both with the same results.

Hope this helps...

@Jason - one important edit to the instructions ... if it's the wireless controller you want to load or unload, the kext name is Wireless360Controller.ket, so you'd need 'sudo kextunload Wireless360Controller.kext' to unload, and 'sudo kextload Wireless360Controller.kext' to load.

Hope this got to you before frustration kicked in...

@Graham, thanks for your work and advise. I do think there is a deeper issue with the wireless controller. I am aware and have done all your previous suggestions. I am running 10.7 with a wireless controller and here is what I am running into when I have all extensions wireless or not disabled, uninstalled, "unloaded."  In running Apple console, Rage tries to access "IOHIDLibUserClient" via sandbox and receives an error. I have uninstalled every unrelated USB driver and still have the same results. no luck. I search the error on Apple's site the error and found this (http://lists.apple.com/archives/usb/2012/Jan/msg00011.html) which is very interesting. Evidently the developers using sandbox to connect joystick with their App are having the same issue. This was 2 weeks ago. Apple says:

Unfortunately there are no entitlements that allow sandboxed access to HID APIs at this time.

Aspyr could totally use the architecture that has been used for years with "tattiebogle" and we would have no issue with wireless controllers. I would have bought the xbox version if I wanted to play this bad, but it is fun finding solutions though!! :)  I do however, believe what you are saying. I also believe that a wired controller would work and I am trying to find one today.

If you unload the wireless kext for either the controller or the dongle, the controller will no longer connect to the dongle.

Here are the reports from console

@Jason; I'm sorry to have to report that your findings are absolutely correct. While I can interchange the wired and wireless Xbox 360 controllers with my other Mac games (BioShock, Portal 2 etc.), with RAGE I can only use the wired controller, and then, only with the tattiebogle driver unloaded.

I don't get the sandbox denial reported in the console - perhaps because I'm running the non-MAS version of the game. Having said that, I can only assume the non-MAS version is the same binary as the MAS version, so perhaps I'm hitting the same wall. (The fact that I get an 'unknown class: InAppPurchaseView' message in the console would suggest they are :)

Not sure where to go from here. Wired, by the looks of things.

Over to Aspyr...

@Graham, it took a bit, but I had a hunch not all microsoft controllers would work based on this. I should have a wried controller by this afternoon. I hope to taste the workable controller first hand.

I have a 2011 iMac OXS 10.7.2, 2.7 Ghz Intel Core i5, 4GB 1333 Mhz DDR3, with graphics:  AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB. This graphics chipset is not in the supported list. Will Rage work?

I have a problem using my wired xbox 360 controller for Rage. I have the Tattiebogle thing but it won't work in the game. I have tried taking it off then use the controller and it still doesn't work. any help is much appreciated.

Having the same problem as Ryan!

RIGHT. I've tried fully deleting tattiebogle and all its associated files. I've tried following the terminal route, with - apparently - decent success in unloading the kext file. I've tried restarting my iMac several times. I've tried starting Rage with the controller plugged in, starting Rage with the controller unplugged, starting Rage with the controller unplugged and only plugging it in after enabling, etc, etc. Nothing seems to be working.

I'm pretty sure Tattiebogle is no longer active on my machine. I'll try fully deleting it again in a minute, just to make 400% sure (I've already done this once). Yet the wired xBox 360 controller which I have is not registering with the app at all.

Any suggestions / support greatly appreciated!

TY in advance...

TY, Ryan. That's exactly what I'd done. Several times.

It turns out that the controller worked in full screen, but wasn't working when windowed.

Why that's the case, I have no idea... Got it working (full screen), anyhows.

Rage only supports:

keyboard + mouse controls,

the Xbox 360 Controller for Windows,

and the Xbox 360 Wired Controller.

Third party drivers are not supported for this game (including Tattiebogle drivers)  and will cause conflicts with the game and Microsoft's default drivers.  Unplug your supported controller, then delete the following:

HD/Library/Preference Panes/Pref 360 controller

HD/Receipts/Installer.plist

HD/Startup Items/360 Control Daemon

HD/System/Library/Extensions/360Controller.kext

HD/System/Library/Extensions/Wireless360Controller.kext

HD/System/Library/Extensions/WirelessGamingReceiver.kext

HD/System/Library/Frameworks/Forcefeedback.framework

Restart your computer and empty the trash bin.  Plug in your supported controller and the game will recognize it properly.

If the issue continues, please submit a support ticket with us or call us.

hey I'm so so sorry for this perhaps... slow question but my macbook pro specs are:

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory: 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000 384

Software: Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3

but my real question is can my mac handle this game. i noticed that the processor had to be a duo core and i just wasn't sure if my processor/ system would be able to run this at minimal/recommended specs.

I've been eager to purchase this game on my macbook pro for a while now and would been frickin grateful for your answer. thanks

Right.

Further to the above (wrt the xBox 360 controller), following a restart the controller was again refusing to work. I had to go through the sudo kextunload process again (though preceded it with sudo kextload, just to make sure there was something loaded to be unloaded...).

It STILL refused to work when I then restarted Rage, plugging the controller in after starting the app.

Controller finally worked after restarting (again), this time ensuring that the controller was plugged in before the app was started.

Bleh.

Life would be much simpler if Aspyr could find a way of supporting tattiebogle's driver too!

My save games don't work for the authority prison. When I try to restore it kicks me out to the entrance to the prison and I have to start all over again. Very frustrating. Also I use the keypad for movement and actions, the number 9 key is mapped to the number 8 key so that I cannot assign different actions to these keys without one overwriting the other.

I'm not sure if this only works in the USA but if you're having trouble launching RAGE only because of a receipt issue due to Appe, you can open up package contents and replace the receipt with one from Twitter or another app.

(Regarding the com.aspyrrage.appstore/Data/... savegame path quoted above. I bought the non-App Store version of the game and my saved games are stored in HD:Users:<user>:Library:Application Support:Rage:base:savegame.)

I've noticed an issue with the contents of the savegame directories when they don't load. After resolving this issue the save games will load for me, every time, but I wanted to mention the path caveat above in case it's a result of having the non-App Store version. I should also note I'm only up to the Mutant Bash TV stage of the game in case that has a bearing on the situation.

Basically, for manually saved games (i.e. not autosaves), RAGE saves instanceN.rage files in the savegame directory (among others), where N is a PID or similar. In my experience, when a save game won't load, there are always two or more of these files in the savegame directory. If all but the latest instanceN.rage files are removed, the RAGE will load that saved game again, with everything intact. Of course, you might want to back up your 'base' directory first :)

It would be interesting to know if this is the same problem for the App Store version of the game...
