We have a POTENTIAL workaround for getting the latest Civilization V patch from the App Store.
While this workaround works for most users, we have seen that some users are not able to reinstall the game after following the steps. Apple knows about this problem and has told us they are trying to fix it· You will need to delete the Civilization V Campaign Edition Application from yourApplications folder.· Empty the trash bin located on the dock.· You will NOT need to delete anything else, this includes the Civilization VCampaign Edition folder within Application Support or thecom.aspyr.civ5campaign.plist.· Launch the App Store and select the purchases tab.· Click on the install button located to the right of the Civilization V CampaignEdition Icon.We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. Apple is aware of the issue and is working to resolve the problem.

Not working. Followed the directions. AppStore downloaded the file but application did not show up in the Applications folder. Application did not show up in a file search. Trying again. Will let y'all know after the second time.
Civilization V Campaign Edition on App Store is not updating. OS is dead halt
I have tried to download patch several times from appstore but it still shows update possibility in appstore and the game is not updated.
Patch is over 3GB so please let me know when it will be fixed.
I wonder where are saves in CIV V - I am afraid that when I delete CIV all saves will gone and that will be bad surprise for my children :(
The "workaround" worked for me... long download from app store but it is now working and not telling me I need to update anymore.
and what about old save games ?
Old saves were still there. I backed up the folder that holds it... path was: /Users/<YOURUSERNAME>/Library/Application Support/Civilization V Campaign Edition/Saves just in case.
I just saved the whole folder. When everything re-installed, the files were still in the same folder.
Performance appears to a little better but stability is much better in my opinion. I played a global map and have way too many cities I have taken over and the old version was so busy that I would lock up several times a day. Played the new patch for about 3 hours and did not lock up one time. So far so good and I would guess that the scenario I am playing is very taxing on the app.
I followed all the instructions above and now I can't install the game anymore!! So I recommend to not uninstall the game before they solve this problem.
And can you explain me what's happened for my game??

Unfortunately, this is an Apple delivery issue. All content delivery on the AppStore is handled by Apple.
We have contacted them about this issue, but I recommend you contact them too.
I tried this workaround and now I cannot DL the game without paying again. BAD BAD BAD

I did the deleting, followed the instructions, the result is I no longer have nor will it finish the download of this app. That really sucks... its now installing the whole 3gigs again. another hour. I knew i shouldn't have put trust in this "workaround".... I read the comments too... For ANYONE READING THIS PLEASE DISREGARD THIS TECH SUPPORT POST, IT HAS TOO HIGH OF A PROBABILITY OF FAILING TO TAKE THE RISK.
Well I figured it out!!! You have to empty the trash... Its a very important step if you dont empty the trash for some reason it doesn't reinstall. Sorry tech support, You are reliable. It was me, I just didn't follow the instructions all the way through.
I have done what you say and now my Civilization doesn't appear in my App Store. It is like I've never purchased it!!!
Dear ASPYR,
It looks like your workaround means an extra 3GB download plus installation and, from comments above, it may not always work.
Therefore I suggest you remove the workaround - or at least add warnings of issues reported by those who have tried - and stop asking us to contact Apple support about this - you know about it, Apple knows about it, so show some customer support and copy all complaints to those who should fix the issue.
I don't mind to wait a few days or weeks for a real fix. But how hard can it be to remove the "update warning" on App Store every time I login?
And no, I won't write Apple support about this.
Thanks for an awesome game. Otherwise you would get no complaints :)
This is an Apple issue. We have contacted Apple about it, others have contacted them about it.
We do not control the AppStore, therefore we cannot remove update tags, make sure updates/game builds are delivered to Apple and they do the rest.
They have acknowledged to us that they are trying to fix the problem.
If you guys DO NOT choose to contact the Apple about this, that is your prerogative. Here is why it is a good idea to contact them:
-They control content delivery and all updates.
-When you contact them, you might give them information about your computer/account info/internet connection/locality which might prove very helpful to them in trying to find a solution.
-Apple is the only one who can provide a solution, and they might be able to give you info about their delivery system that we don't have.
We have tested this workaround and it works for us. If it doesn't work for you, call us so we can walk you through the proper procedure.

Can people please post their system specs along with their reports?? I'm on a mid 2011 quad-core i7 macbook pro 8GB RAM ATI Radeon 6750 running OSX 10.7.3.
I'm particularly interested in what machines and OS Aspyr Support is using, and whether this is a Lion bug affecting users that have upgraded to Lion as opposed to us that have had Lion pre-installed on our machines (there seems to be QUITE a difference, according to complaints/reports).
Would be a bit more comforting too. I'm holding off the update until there are more details on this problem, or until the problem has been resolved!
OK... I just tried the steps above and hit a brick wall -- not because it didn't work, but because my qwertasds internet connection failed -- with just 25 minutes left (out of an hour and a half!!).
I took some steps to make sure I can "rollback" onto the previous version though. It's easy -- just change the name of the game. Click on the app and use Get Info (command-i), change the .app to .pkg. The icon will disappear from LaunchPad. Then you can install. If something gets messed up (like what happened to me), delete the 'installation' (the game icon) from LaunchPad and change the .pkg back into .app.
You need to use Get Info as clicking on the icon and naming it in the Finder doesn't work. It appends the .app at the end of the name unless you change it through the info (Get Info) window in the Finder.
If anyone's wondering, .pkg is the extension for file archives... which these new apps are a type of, but pkg files are usually compressed archives. You'll find this technique also comes in handy when you don't want people viewing a folder full o' stuff (you can 'convert' a folder into a .pkg file that won't open or launch just by adding the .pkg suffix to the end of the folder name).
We are still working with Apple to get this fixed.
In the meantime. Have a SWEET deal:

I have the same problem in which the Mac App Store keeps on failing to update my Civ 5 application. I chose to follow the directions mentioned above; however, after I deleted Civ 5 and emptied out the trash bin, I could not see Civ 5 on the list of purchases. I went to Civ 5's page on the Mac App Store, and the button did not say "install" but "$39.99". Do you think this is because I requested a refund of Civ 5, and they deleted the evidence that I ever purchased this application? What can I do to re-download Civ 5 in order to receive the new software updates? At this point, Civ 5 has been totally deleted from my MacBook, and there is no way to retrieve the files; moreover, I cannot re-download Civ 5 from the Mac App Store.
@William Cabinson: Did you get the refund that you requested? If that's so, then of course you'd have to buy it again! If they refunded you for the purchase, you have no right to have the app on your computer or benefit from upgrades. You've handed back those rights -- basically, you don't own a copy of the app anymore. Either you re-purchase the game or consider yourself lucky to have been able to play it even after getting your money back.
Otherwise, if you haven't been refunded yet, then you still own a copy of the game, legally.
Interesting to see that the update warning has been 'adjusted' to point at Lion users. I'm not surprised, and I probably won't be surprised to see that Apple doesn't resolve it anytime soon. Lion is Apple's BETA for Mountain Lion, same way Leopard was the BETA for Snow Leopard and Final Cut Pro X is the BETA for whatever will come next. I'm starting to see this pattern of Apple's new "Let's release it now so people will think we're cranking out stuff on time" philosophy. Oh well. Knowing so makes it easier to deal with.
Hey,
Just joined to add this note. I'm using a MBP 13inch 2011 model and this workaround was fine for me. New version installed and runs fine. I had the same problem initially that when I deleted the file from Applications and emptied the trash it was no longer visible in the App Store. To get around this look in your app store under hidden purchases and it should still be there. Ideally Apple will come with proper support soon for this but this work around does work if you follow their instructions. At least for my machine it did.
Cheers!
I've followed the instructions and it wont reinstall after a number of attempts.... not happy
Any news, Aspyr?
Hello everyone. It works for me. Just follow the advice I posted above -- YOU DO NOT need to trash the file and empty the trash! Just change the name of the app -- replace the .app with .pkg. This worked for me, Early 2011 Quad-Core 2.2Ghz Macbook Pro i7 (not mid 2011 as I mention above) 8GB RAM, OS X Lion pre-installed (not an upgrade from Snow Leopard).
Hey, now I have both versions of Civ IV here to test... but should I bother?
I also got 2 DLC packs and they checked out OK. I was afraid I'd have to re-download them all too!! But no, didn't have to go through another lengthy download process *whew*
OK... now how about that promised DLC pack? Where/how to we get ~that~ ?
I have just tried the initial step to go around this problem and it didn't work. Is there somewhere I can subscribe to be notified as soon as this is fixed? Best regards,
Post your system specs along with your questions, guys. It helps. It really does. If no one posts their specs, then we're all just assuming we're all using different computers, and we'll NEVER see a pattern. SPECS = computer model (go to Apple Menu > About this Mac > More Info) / OS version.
That way we can all figure out if this is only affecting people with older hardware. Might also help to know which country your iTunes account is in -- mine's in Thailand. It ~could~ be a particular problem between countries. Who knows? Unless we post our specs, we may never see a pattern, and it's pretty pointless to be posting here.
There are no announcements that you could subscribe to. Just keep checking the App Store.
Hello, you are right. I am currently using a Mac OS X 10.7.3 and I use the App Store of Guatemala because that's my credit card from; but I am living now in Germany so I don't really know which store is iTunes using. I'll be very happy if this is of some help for you to fix this problem.
Animaster is correct, we NEED you folks to open a support ticket. When you do, please attach a copy of your system profile:
OSX 10.7
-click on the apple icon in the top left of the screen
-select 'About this Mac'
-click on 'System Report'
-When the System Information pops up, click File/Save
-Save it in .spx format
-Attach the .spx file to a reply to this email
OSX 10.6 or earlier
-click on the apple icon in the top left of the screen
-select 'About this Mac'
-click on 'More Info'
-When the System Profile pops up, click File/Save As
-Save it in XML format
-Attach the .spx file to a reply to this email.
This is what Apple is asking from us to help them figure out what is wrong. Also, it is important to contact Apple and send them this info too.
Apple seems to have located the problem, and hopefully we can get this situated soon. I will post here when a fix is definate.
My purchase was made in the Mexico Store and I'm currently in the UK. I managed to update by deleting the application and re-download it. Use your user name from Guatemala and you'll be directed to the Guatemalan store, and you can start to download it.
Is there supposed to be a sale with the new update 1.0.4? It says on the Mac App Store that there's a $10 sale, but the price is still $39.99.
I just deleted a comment by someone named Nate who wanted to "urge everyone to NOT send system profiles to Aspyr" because they contain secret information like your serial number (I don't know exactly what he thinks we would do with that) . He also mentions the Universal Hardware ID (I don't what he thinks we would do with that either)
The reason we ask for this is because it contains information like where and when the game was installed, when it was updated, when you ran OS updates, drive format info, what software you have installed that might be causing conflicts with our software. This has happened many times before by finding that customers have DVD burning software that has interfered with our old disc authentication process. Many of our customers don't know where the game installs or when they last updated, what system updates were applied and when. This is all important information we need to figure out what the problem is. We also use this information to set up accurate test cases for customers. By all means, if you feel uncomfortable sending this info, you don't have to. But it does limit what we can do to address your specific issue.
We are not here to steal your serial number . All the info you send to us is used to find information we need to help you or set up the most accurate testing scenario.
Also, as mentioned above, reinstalling works fine if you EMPTY YOUR TRASH! Apple has located the issue and we can hopefully get this remedied soon.
As a matter of fact, the update just went live.
@Jason, is there supposed to be a sale with the latest update? It says $10 off, yet the price remains at $39.99.
I would be that someone named Nate. The reason I posted that was not to attack Aspyr, and I do not believe that Aspyr's main purpose is to collect UUIDs (Universally Unique Identifiers). I warned everybody to not send their full system reports to Aspyr because I felt that many people may have not entirely known what they were sending. I believe that people have the right to know exactly what they are agreeing to and exactly what information they are providing. Sure, it is the decision of the user in the end to decide if want to provide a detailed analysis of their system or not. Perhaps I came off a bit rash as well; I apologize. I just generally find it a bad idea to give network information and UUIDs to those who don't need that information, whether it be a company or a person.
On a different matter, I am concerned about those like me who bought the Wonders of the Ancient World DLC prior to this update extravaganza. I appreciate the sale of Civ IV, but will I receive some type of compensation for the $5 I spent on the Wonders of the Ancient World DLC? I would appreciate possibly a free DLC or app that would regularly be equivalent to $5.
@Nate Seems like your idea was put to practice for everyone. Aspyr is now giving a free Ancient World DLC for everyone. Thanks!
@The Animaster, you are a troll.
The 'update' as it is called is merely a one click reinstall (3.12 gb) from the app store. Its like the workaround compressed into one click. This game is gonna raise our bandwidth charges by.
Ok I see the price change now. And Nate you do have an advantage of buying the DLC, you got to use it before anyone who didn't buy it. Now stop whining and enjoy the game.
@ThePundit I'll forgive your ignorance, but look who's trolling?
Also the 1.0.4 update is NOT a full re-install. Apple's fixed it, so it should be an incremental update if you're going from 1.0.3 to 1.0.4. Perhaps even from 1.0.2 to 1.0.4. But that was the whole problem in the first place -- something was wrong with the incremental updating.
@The Animaster What is the size of your incremental update now? I am getting a whopping 3.12GB update at the App Store - that can in no way be incremental can it?
@ThePundit: Mine was less than a hundred megabytes (I think in the range of 32-60 megabytes, can't remember exactly now, because the download was so quick) from 1.0.3 to 1.0.4. Note that I upgraded from 1.0.2 to 1.0.3 using the method I posted above. The 1.0.3 update was the 'fiddly' one, which was fixed, and then quickly replaced by the 1.0.4 update which included the free DLC. So yeah, from 1.0.3 to 1.0.4 it was just a couple megabytes.
@The Animaster thanks
@Jason Is there something wrong if I am getting a 3.12GB update to update from 1.0.2 to 1.0.4 when the full game size is just 2.91GB.
Animaster, I wasn't asking for a full refund of the game, or even a refund for the $10 off. I was simply requesting some sort of compensation for the DLC I purchased prior to version 1.0.3. If I bought jeans that went on sale for free the following day, then I would certainly ask for a refund. That's common business courtesy. Have you ever bought something from Target that went on sale a week or two after you bought it? They offer store credit of the dividend of the sale price and the price you paid. Of course, this is only offered for the first couple weeks after you bought the item. The problem is that I bought the pack in 2011 I believe, so I don't exactly have that "I just bought it and it just went on sale" argument. I still feel a little ripped of because that was one of the three out of seven available DLCs that I downloaded. There was less than a 50% chance of one of the DLCs going on sale being one that I had already bought, so I feel that this is worth a shot. If anything, I'd like to know how Aspyr selected the Wonders of the Ancient World pack over the other six to be free.
Pundit, the file size for my upgrade from 1.0.2 to 1.0.4 was also 3.12GB. I found it a little strange as well, but I just started the ~30 to 40 minute download in the background as I worked on other things. It now reports in Finder that I am on version 1.0.4, and at the bottom of the Civ V main page it states version 1.0.1.511, which is the PC version. For a full list of what this patch includes can be found in a nice format at http://apolyton.net/content.php/677-Civilization-5-patch-1.0.1.511-... A full list of all updates to Civ V can be found at http://store.steampowered.com/news/?feed=steam_updates&appids=8930
As a side note, I've noticed that the UI feature released in the December 19 patch, "Change “Load Game” save sorting to be “Last Modified” by default," no longer works. The Load Game sorting is still shows up as being sorted by "Last Modified" by default in the field, but in reality it sorts by name, and then you have to select "Last Modified" from the drop-down menu. Is anybody else who updated to 1.0.4 experiencing this?
