Permissions issues can cause all types of performance issues in games. To repair permission issues in Mac OS X 10.1.x, you need to first download the Repair Permissions Utility 1.1. This can be found here:

Once you have downloaded the RepairPrivleges1.1.dmg, you will need to mount the disk image and copy the Repair Privileges to your Desktop. Once you have done this, launch the Repair Privileges icon on your Desktop, and select the volume you want to repair. This will be the hard drive, and not the game disc. You will then need to enter an Admin password. Once you have done this you will need to click the repair button. The repair will then run and will take a while to finish. Once it is done try running the game again.
