OpenAL and Windows

Note: This article applies to Neverwinter Nights (all versions), Baldur’s Gate, Baldur’s Gate II, and Icewind Dale versions 2.6 and later.

 

Some Windows users may encounter launch issues or errors related to OpenAL. If your game fails to launch, try reinstalling OpenAL by following the steps below:

  • For Neverwinter Nights, run the OpenAL installer - oalinst.exe - included with your installation of NWN in the bin\win32 folder.
  • For other Infinity Engine games 2.6 or later, run the OpenAL installer - oalinst.exe - in the root of your game install folder

For all other games, please download the latest OpenAL installer from https://www.openal.org/downloads/

 

***Do NOT manually copy a random OpenAL32.dll file into your Windows\System32 folder. Use the OpenAL installer instead.***
